Why you should you make your own hummus?

We love hummus for so many reasons. It’s healthy, full of protein, cheap, easy, and versatile. It can be adapted to whatever flavour you’re in the mood for. Eat it plain, spicy, with beetroot, basil, or chocolate. Yes, chocolate! Can a simple dish get more adaptable?

Making hummus is as simple as blending all of the ingredients in a food processor until smooth. Zero cooking skills are required. Give it a go yourself, once you’ve made homemade hummus you’ll never buy shop-bought again.

Purse Friendly

Homemade hummus is much cheaper than store-bought, and you’ll get double the amount of hummus from one tin of chickpeas than a store-bought tub.

No Additives

When you make it you control what goes in it; avoiding all those nasty artificial additives found in processed food. This isn’t always easy in this modern world with all of its commitments, full-time work, kids, exercise and everything else that life throws at us. That’s why homemade hummus is perfect. Even if you don’t have time to make all of your meals from scratch, you can absolutely make this spicy hummus in minutes with zero effort.

Ingredients and Adaptions

Nearly empty fridge and cupboards? Luckily for you; less than a handful of essential ingredients are needed to make this spicy hummus or any hummus recipe, making it a pantry friendly recipe.

The basic ingredients are:

  1. Chickpeas
  2. Tahini
  3. Salt
  4. Aquafaba (or water)
  5. Lemon juice (optional)
  6. Extra virgin olive oil (optional)

After you have your basic ingredients, the rest is up to you. Fancy a Moroccan hummus? Simply add some cinnamon, ground ginger and black pepper. Fancy an Indian curry twist? Just add some coriander and curry powder. It’s that simple.

Tinned or Fresh Chickpeas?

Use either tinned chickpeas or cook your own from scratch. Tinned chickpeas are convenient for last-minute meal plans as they’re already cooked.

Fresh chickpeas are fresher, marginally tastier, and slightly more cost-effective. However, fresh chickpeas do need pre-soaking and cooking for roughly an hour, so only use fresh chickpeas if you have the time and will use up a batch before they go off. Make sure to use roughly the same weight as you would with the drained canned chickpeas.
